Mother-of-pearl (or nacre) is the innermost shell layer of shell-forming mollusks, such as pearl oysters and sea snails. It serves as protection for the animals against predators. Mother-of-pearl consists of over 95% calcium carbonate and up to 5% organic matter. The unique luster, shimmer, and color of mother-of-pearl are determined by the number and thickness of the different layers and vary depending on the species and geographic origin.
The polished shells of mother-of-pearl served as a sought-after form of currency for barter among South Sea islanders for millennia. They were also used to make fishing lures, spoons, buttons, furniture inlays, and wooden boxes. Due to its iridescent optical properties, it has long been used in jewelry making.
